Each year I always anxiously await arriving at the Giant Cliffs on Saturday for lunch. It is a natural resting place that has lured our group since the trip's inception. You can view many pictures of this area and the fun we have had there over the years on the website. (http://CampTatum.com).
Our trip by it's very nature attracts some of the best fathers and sons our area has to offer. Everyone exemplifies a love of the values that have made our country great. No better example of this is Iron Man Andy Halbrook. On Andy's very first trip over 13 years ago with his father and son, Andy surprised everyone. While the rest of us were resting and snacking someone noticed a giant of a man coming out of the river at the base of the Giant Cliff. This man proceeded to climb the rock face for about 40 feet. After arriving at the top this man turns and addresses the group in a loud bellowing voice about our shared love of country and family. At the conclusion, he turned toward the river and did a magnificent swan dive. The group went wild. This man was Andy Halbrook. This event has become an annual, highly anticipated tradition ever since. Last year Andy shared these responsibilities with his son Andrew who followed his Father's example learned over the many years. Andrew gave a stirring talk on "Courage" and then ended with the famous Halbrook dive.
Whether it's singing at the Ozark Cafe on Saturday's Karaoke night or diving off cliffs the Halbrook family has greatly contributed to making this trip special over the years. They are just one example. The trip is full of unique, gifted and talented people that contribute to making our community a better place. Our sons represent some of the best of our country's future. Being in their company is a treasure. I encourage you and your son to come hangout for a weekend and enjoy some great fellowship with our group. You will be glad you did. Join us for Buffalo 2011.
